Austin Kleon Book

This book by Austin Kleon, 'Show Your Work! 10 Ways to Share Your Creativity and Get Discovered', is all about exploring the ideas of the of yourself as an artist. It was handed out on Moodle as a resource, but I got caught by the way that the book was illustrated throughout. Obviously, people who read this book are visual people into art, so the author knew his audience and used this to create an interesting piece. The way the text has been playfully used is intriguing. The use of yellow and black creates a crime scene feeling like tape like a beware but it's just a graphic way of getting noticed. The way different materials have been used but then pushed back into a format is interesting as well. The fact that the biro and felt tip stops in a square reminds you that it is a multiplied piece printed several times and isn't personal. It reminded me of the Tom Gates books that I read growing up.

I like the mix of materials and the graphic and typography experiments. This is something I am going to explore more and have fun with just experimenting. I also think I will look more into limiting my colour palette as the use of just 3 simple bold colours makes the imagery have a large impact and makes the whole book feel more cohesive.
