Interview Questions-

Hello, how are you today?
This interview is based on the ideas of Mental Health. Anything said is anonymous and if you don’t want to answer a question you can ask to pass it. If you are uncomfortable you can ask to finish the interview early. Are you happy to talk about this topic?

IF YES..

Are you Male, Female or prefer not to say?
Is your age range under 18 or over 18?
Have you experienced any mental health issues yourself within your life? If you are happy to please name what? (Question more if interviewee is comfortable with answering this)

Did you feel you had someone to talk to?

Have you witnessed anyone around you who has suffered with mental health issues? If so who are they in relation to you?
If yes to the last question did this affect you in any way, if so, how?
How is your family unit? Good, Mixed, Broken.
When growing up when you were upset did you feel comfortable going to family members about this? Who did you go to?
Have you ever seen your parents cry? If so who and why, did they explain to you how old were you?
Do you think a child should see their parent cry? Why?
Do you personally believe that mental health is spoken about enough between parents and children? Explain…
What mental health condition do you think isn’t spoken about enough? And needs to be?
If you felt you were struggling with mental health yourself, would you be confident in knowing where to go for help?
Any other points you would like to bring up that you feel are important?

Y- Me A- Anonymous

Y- So first of all, how are you today?

A- Yeah very good thank you.

Y- So this interview is based on the ideas of mental health. Anything said is anonymous, If you don’t want to answer any of the questions, you can pass it happily. If you are uncomfortable answering any of the questions you can finish the interview early. We do not have to speak about any more than you want to. Are you happy to talk about this?

A- *nods*

Y- So you are okay to go ahead?

A- Go for it.

Y- So first of all, are you male, female or prefer not to say?

A- male.

Y- Are you under the age of 18 or over ?

A- Over.

Y- Okay, so have you personally experienced any mental health issues yourself within your life?

A- No, personally and nothing, nothing major.

Y- If you are happy to did you want to disclose what? Its up to you.

A- Yeah, nothing not really big, you know. Just some kinda bad days. There’s not been like a timelineor anything.

Y- When you have a bad day do you feel like you’ve had someone to talk to about this? Or do you feel like you’ve had to keep it to yourself?

A- I’ve usually just gotten on with it myself. Because its not been anything big.

Y- If it was something big do you think that you would communicate?

A- Yeah, yeah if it was something big then yeah. I would just talk to someone.

Y- Have you personally witnessed anyone around you who has suffered with mental health issues? If so who are they in relation to you

A- Not really to be honest with you. No, no one close. Uhmmmmm no I wouldn’t say so.

Y- okay. How is your family unit? This is basic categorizing so don’t be offended by this. Is it good, half and half kind of mixed or is it broken as a family.

A- Its good.

Y- When you were growing up, when you were upset, did you feel comfortable going to family members about this? And if so who did you go to?

A- Usually my mum.

Y- Usually your mum. Did you ever go to anyone else or was it just always your mum?

A- Be more my mum. I don’t know why. Guess it was because dad was usually at work so…

Y- Okay. Have you ever seen any of your parents cry?

A- Yeah.

Y- If you are comfortable saying so, who and why? And did they take the time to explain to you at all? And how old were you?

A- Young. Nothing recent. If theres been something in the family that’s happened.

Y- Like a family tragedy?

A- Yeah. I mean obviously that was more recent. It was a long time ago when I was younger. I vaguely remember times seeing one of them but I was too young to know why.

Y- Who was it? Sister, Mum, Dad?

A- Yeah mum briefly, when I was younger. But I think obviously it was just a one off thing. But I never knew why because I was too young.

Y- Do you think as a child you should see you parents cry?

A- yeah.

Y- Okay, why? There are no right or wrong answers here. No pressure.

A- Because I think it shows that its good to display emotions. And to show that’s it okay to do it. If its something like yeah a regular thing, you wouldn’t want to cry too much because then I feel like the kid may get a little bit worries. Its kinda a line between that. I think if you cried too much I think you’d probably have something you need to speak to someone about. But yeah I think its okay to show emotions definitely.

Y- Do you personally believe that mental health is spoken about enough between parents and their children?

A- No. And I don’t think it is at schools as well.

Y- Is there a specific mental health condition that you believe isn’t spoken about enough and needs to be taught more at schools? Or do you think they all need to be spoken about?

A- Yeah I think I all. I think generally. I think depression that kind of thing. Especially with lockdown and all that too. But yeah I think you know instead of some subjects like RE (Religious Education) and that kind of thing. I don’t remember at school having any talk about any mental health, unless you were experiencing it, and then youd have to tell someone and then they would probably would. But I don’t remember any lessons about it or anything like that. So they should do that more. Definitely.

Y- If you personally felt like you were struggling with mental health yourself, would you be confident knowing where to go for help or assistance?

A- Yeah, I would now because there’s more nowadays about it. Maybe not so much growing up. But I think bow there’s more people that can help. More groups and online groups… Obviously my family I would go to first. I know there’s a lot more help you can get from people in groups.

Y- Would you ever go to the doctors, or would you just stick to trying to sort it out yourself?

A- Personally it depends. I would probably speak to family and friends first. I would see if any of them had anything and if they had then where did they go. Because I don’t know about the doctors.

Y- Yeah a bit of personal experience.

A- Yeah im not sure I feel as though doctors will just brush it off for something else sometimes. If I had to eventually then yeah I would. But i wouldn’t go there as a first port of call.

Y- One of the last questions. Are there any other points that you feel like should be spoken about in relation to this interview, anything you are like ooo this should be looked into? If no that’s fine.

A- No not really. Nothing that you haven’t mentioned already.
